 Is the age old question parents around the world are asking this same question. Well there is not really a formula or a technique you can adapt that could magically get your child to become an open book. Every child is different in their own way, some are quite zealous or some are a little reserved. It all comes down to how they were raised and the environment they grew up in. Kids tend to be more reserved when it comes to extremely strict parents whereas kids with parents who are understanding tend to be more open and vocal about their situation. Now you are probably thinking it’s too late, well it’s not and here is why.

You cannot change your past but you can influence your future by doing certain things that can help you to understand your child better. So take out your notepads and write this three step process to get your child to open up, as mentioned above every child is unique but with a little grit these steps can aid the process. There is also a bonus step at the end.

Step number one, share your thoughts with your child. What do I mean by that? Talk to your child about your work life, about how hard or easy your tasks are and how sometimes you run into tough situations. Sharing your experiences with your child tends to have a ripple effect where he would too want to share his thoughts and emotions with you. This not only allows him to open up to you but also release any positive or negative feelings he may have towards his work or school so that you may advise him on what to do.

Step number two, giving your child more responsibilities. Why is that? Well kids who are given more responsibilities can lead to them being less reserved as they know their parents can trust them. These responsibilities can be simple things such as giving them pocket money that would last them three to four days and giving them reassurance that you as parents trust them to spend their pocket money wisely. This not only allows your child to feel that he can be trusted but he/she will go out of their way to ensure this trust is not lost. This in return causes them to feel more bonded and respected by their parents and they can replicate that same trust back at them.

Step number three, let your child make his or her own decisions. This definitely does not mean that you give them the reins completely but give them good feedback on what decisions they are about to make especially if it is a life decision such as choosing the right college and their career pathway. These heavy decisions should  be made by your child but with your guidance along the way. This shows that you genuinely have your child’s best interest at heart as all parents should and this too allows your child to be more open about his/her feelings.

There is a bonus step as well. Taking up the same interests that your child has. This can mean a plethora of things such as gaming, sports, reading or singing, the list goes on. Having something to bond over with your kids is one of the best ways you can get them to open up. Kids sometimes need a change of scenery when they plan to open up to you. This could be at a ball game or a park anywhere but the normal house setting. 

One thing you should always do is make time for your kids no matter how busy or stressed you are with your work.
