Preschool to Primary School: Preparing your child for lifelong learning

From preschool environment to primary school environment. It is a big leap.  It is easy to understand the anxiety and excitement that comes with it. As parents, it is important to manage our own emotions and expectations, and not to channel our anxieties onto our children. Transitions are an integral part of a lifelong learning process and moving up to primary schooling is just the beginning.

With guiding them through these emotional and environmental transitions at a young age, we allow them to develop desirable behavioural patterns and coping mechanisms throughout life.

Here are 4 ways to reassure children and show them that moving up to primary school can be an exciting and positive experience:

1. Let your child know what to expect.

• Make sure your child understands what primary school all it is about and how differs from preschool. Inform them of the new routines they will learn, the new classroom environment in which they will study, and the new friends they will make. Share your favourite aspects of school, such as recess, making new friends, learning a sport, and your favourite teachers. This conversation might help your child look forward to, rather than dread, a new school year. Encourage them to talk to you about how they feel about going to school and any concerns they may have about the first day.

2. Attend school orientations.

• Consider this as an introduction on the primary school experience. It will be difficult to transition from the oldest preschool class to the youngest primary school class. It will be intimidating to see a larger group of classmates and a larger school compound. Orientation programs are an excellent place to start if you want to make your youngster feel more at ease. They may even have the opportunity to meet their future classmates in addition to getting a sense of the atmosphere. Take your child on a tour of the school grounds to familiarize him or her with key facilities such as the canteen, the general office, classrooms, and the restrooms.

3. Ensure academic readiness.

• Give your child a head start, but don’t overburden them. It’s normal to want to look at Primary 1 syllabuses in order to prepare them with all of the information they’ll need ahead of time. Focusing on your child’s literacy and numeracy skills will help them deal with their new curriculum. Young children can understand and carry out directions, they will feel more at ease.

4. Introducing new routines.

• If children have effectively adapted to the environment, expectations, and routines, they will be more sensitive to new approaches and challenges as they advance from a familiar setting into a new environment. Go over the new routine with your child to make the adjustment easier. Allow them to gradually adjust to a schedule that includes time slots for various activities throughout the day. They may have to get used to getting up early in order to catch the school bus. Assist your child in becoming comfortable with school rules, classroom manners, and how to seek assistance when necessary.
