Online friends, are they dangerous?

In this day and age where everyone is obsessed with social media and online gaming, many people are connecting through the internet and forming friendships with people they have only spoken to through the screen and have never met before in real life. This is more common in teenagers – especially now during the pandemic when they are stuck indoors with nothing to do – than it is in younger children, however, there are some cases where young and impressionable children are making friends online.

Just like friends in real life, online friendships can be safe, but they can also be dangerous, so it is good to be sceptical about your child’s safety when talking to someone they met online.

It is important to note that not everyone your child meets online is who they say they are. Behind their profile, they can be a catfish (someone who fakes their identity) who are seeking to become your child’s friend with malicious intent. They can also turn out to be predators or groomers who are trying to manipulate your child into a relationship with them.

For those reasons, it is important to talk to your child and remind them about the dangers of talking to a stranger on the internet. It is no different than talking to a stranger in real life. Remind them not to share any personal information, and that it is okay to stop talking to someone if he or she makes your child uncomfortable.

Should I allow my child to have them?

It is entirely up to you if want to allow your child to have online friends, however, remember that with easy access to the internet now, it is hard to completely ban your child from making friends online.

The best thing to do is to supervise your child’s online interaction so that you can judge for yourself whether their online friendships are safe or not. If you feel there is something suspicious going on, tell your child to stop talking to their online friends immediately. While they might be reluctant and might try to argue about it, remind them it is for their safety.

In case you aren’t able to supervise their online interactions, encourage your child to talk about their online friends so that they are comfortable telling you if they feel uncomfortable or suspicious of something.
