How much sleep does my child need? And how many hours is it?

The amount of sleep a child need varies depending on him or her. It also depends on certain factors – like the age of the child.

Preteens (7-to-12-year-olds) require at least 9 to 12 hours of sleep per night, and teenagers (13-to-18-year-olds) require at least 8 to 10 hours of sleep. What is sleep deprivation and how can I help my child counteract it?

Sleep deprivation is a general term to describe a state caused by inadequate quantity or quality of sleep, including voluntary and involuntary sleeplessness and circadian rhythm sleep disorders. While anyone at any age can suffer from sleep deprivation, it affects children differently than it affects adults. Sleepy children tend to speed up rather than slow down. The symptoms of sleep deprivation in children include:

• Moodiness and irritability

• Temper tantrums

• The tendency to emotionally explode at the slightest provocation

• Over-activity and hyperactivity behaviour

• Daytime naps

• Grogginess when they wake up in the morning

• Reluctance to get out of bed in the morning

Sleep deprivation adds up over time, so an hour less per night is like a full night without sleep by the end of the week. This may cause your child to have a hard time paying attention in school.

To counteract sleep deprivation or to make sure that your child does not become sleep-deprived, make sure that your child has a bedtime routine that encourages good sleep habits. Include a technology-free winding down period in the routine at least an hour before lights-out. It is also important to have a consistent bedtime so that your child is able to get the proper amount of sleep that they need.
